It may not surprise you to know I’m someone who LOVES making New Year’s resolutions. I look forward to the process each and every year. I actually get GIDDY about it.
There’s something about the inherent possibility of a blank canvas that gives me hope. I see it just waiting for us to add lines and structure, shapes and texture, color and shadows. Not in a mass-production sort of way, though, or something that blends in with everyone else’s.
This is the chance to create a one-of-a-kind masterpiece. Our designs. Our brushstrokes. And it’s not about erasing the past; it’s about creating the future.

So when we think about crafting resolutions for the coming year, perhaps we can consider it in a way that goes so much deeper than creating a list of DOs and DON’Ts that we may or may not be able to live up to. Hit the gym everyday? Probably not. Give up cookies? Snort.
What we can do is sketch out a map that marks clearly our goals, values and priorities. We can design a more mindful approach to living our hours and days and weeks in a way that moves us ever closer to the living the full lives we dream of. We can use it in situations of choosing between A and B – when we may be misguided by fear or anger or other emotions that cloud our vision – to remember what that vision looks like, and then choose accordingly.
Do you know what YOUR vision is?
Do you know yet what you’re willing to do – or not do – to realize it?
Do you believe fiercely, deep in your strong bones, that you’ve got the will required to make the choices you need to design the life you want?
If you take nothing else with you into 2016, let it be the unwavering faith in this:
The lives we want are possible – IF we can visualize our dreams, believe in ourselves, and commit to doing the courageous work necessary to make them come true. We’re all lucky to have choices… we just have to be brave enough to make them.
